Green Zone - WTF
So I was unfortunate enough to spend almost 2 hours watching the new matt damon movie... and well... I still regret it, because I will never get those 2 hours back. Needless to say this isn't a glowing review.
So I am just going to get right into the spoilers so that I can pretty much proceed to rip this movie to shreds. First off this movie takes place in Baghdad, Iraq circa 2003 just after the second US invasion. Matt Damon plays a chief warrant officer charged with tracking the much sought after WMD's which were the pretense under which the US invaded Iraq in the first place.

So what really makes me sad is that they are finally making a movie about this NOW... O gee maybe like 6 fucking years to late matt!!? What really makes me afraid is that even now many people are calling this movie "anti-american".
The most effective way to restrict democracy is to transfer decision-making from the public arena to unaccountable institutions: kings and princes, priestly castes, military juntas, party dictatorships, or modern corporations. - Noam Chomsky
Seriously though... It is about time that america started hearing this type of stuff. Isn't it about time we all started acknowledging the fact that they let a trained chimp run the whit house for almost 8 years. I think it would do the world a big favor if we all gave our heads a shake and took a good hard look at our global political and economic institutions. We need to recognize that the people we have put in power are falable and sometimes capable of doing great harm.
At the end of the day it broke my heart that the second iraq war even happened. The fact remains that at the end of the day the story that this movie tries to tell is only a small portion of the corruption, deciet and incomptence that made up the political lead up to the Iraq war.
In a time of universal deceit, telling the truth becomes a revolutionary act- george orwell
In my mind this movie is the furthest thing from 'anti-american' because it is daring to speak out, when NO other commercial media has dared to broach this subject. Media and the public should not be be at risk for speaking out against their governments. But yet there has been a real code of silence in the US, and I for one feel it's time it was broken.
So I guess that is where this rant ends up... I still hate matt damon... but well... at least he is taking a stand on something, and at the same time saying something I think the US desperately needs to hear. I think that right now the US is in a stage of great fragility, but I still hold out hope that things will improve, but I also feel that reflecting upon past mistakes is a part of the healing process.
PS. Matt - I loved you in the informant
(It just didn't make me angry enough to blog about it.)
