back to basics

So I have noticed lately that there is a real resurgence in handmade goods, but also in the visual art world, there seems to be a return to some of the basics of art and design.

Simple pencil, chalk and biro pen drawings are now common place in galleries around the world. These artists are taking 'the basics' to whole new heights. There are so many examples of amazing art made with the simplest of tools. here are just a  few samples from some amazing artists that you should check out.

These first examples are from Philipp Zurmöhle, a graphic designer working for Adidas in Germany. Beautiful line work, composition form... elegant in it's simplicity. enjoi

Ape and Shapes - Philipp Zurmöhle

these next couple of examples are from local wunderkind Jeff Hamada, who many of you will know simply as booooooom. Jeff has been producing some amazing work lately with basic implements like pencil crayon and watercolors.

In fact I think he has just donated his piece 'Dear Louis Vuitton' to the Asian Canadian Artist Showcase & Aution, so if you like his work be sure to show some love!

Speaking of pencil crayon, watercolor and biro pens, I have been super digging on lately is UK fashion illustrator Niki Pilkington. I simply love her quirky yet elegant illustrative style. Niki has been blowing up lately with exhibitions, portrait commissions, and commercial work. All this work on her plate, and her work is still straight up amazing.

This final artist has been a favorite of mine for a while now, and his recent show at Bold Hype in Orlando represents (in my opinion) some of his best work yet. Most of these are done with either bic pen, markers and in some cases a little acrylic splashed in the mix.

anyways, enjoy one of my personal favs, Andrew Spear.

Andrew Spear - Dragon My Time - Bic Pen on Paper

Andrew Spear - Suzanna Sketch - Bic Pen on Paper

Andrew Spear - Neon Girl - Bic Pen and Colored Pencil on Paper

And finally for all you digital design freaks out there... I have attached a few rad hand drawn typefaces for you all to use in your projects!
